Academics

School-Wide Academic Procedures

At Blythewood Middle School, the expectation is that all students will take their academics seriously, do their best work, turn in all assignments on time and study regularly so that they are  prepared for tests and quizzes.  However, when this does not occur, we need to encourage students to show responsibility for their learning by completing the assignments, as well as putting forth effort to demonstrate mastery for learning.

Grading should be an assessment of student learning: a consistent and equitable process across our district.  Grading should provide accurate, timely, and meaningful feedback to all partners as to where students are on their pathways toward mastery of the standards.

Furthermore:

  • Grades should not be a punitive discipline tool nor merely a function of student participation and effort.
  • Grading is one of many forms of feedback to assess student growth and is a dynamic and fluid component of learning.
  • Mastery of standards refers to the knowledge and skills successfully acquired by students in their learning progression.
